Patta Tease Their Next Collaboration

Just when you thought the surprises were done, Patta revealed their next project as if out of nowhere.

Hot off the back of their incredibly successful Air Max 1 series with Nike, ending on a clean triple white colourway similar to Edson Sabajo’s 1 of 1 pair in honour of his late son Roman, the Amsterdam-based brand isn’t done yet.

Patta is a label that has had the opportunity to collaborate with a vast array of brands from Nike and ASICS to Diadora and Mizuno just to name a few. First collaborating with Nike in 2006 with the ‘Homegrown’ Air Max 90 just two years after opening their store with a subtle (or not so subtle when looking at the design on the upper) hint to what Amsterdam is well known for.

Soon after, Patta went on to create a myriad of projects in reasonably quick succession, the most popular of which has been their work with Nike with each release holding a deeper meaning or story behind it.

It’s this sense of storytelling and more profound meaning that permeates throughout everything Patta do; from their humble beginnings of sourcing products from other countries, flat packing the sneaker boxes and remaking them back at home to creating well over 50 collaborations. Next up on the roster, New Balance.

Marking their third collaborative project, Patta and New Balance only started co-creating in 2020 with the release of the 920 ‘Made in UK’, followed by a 991 the year after. Going for the third strike, the two are this time working on a silhouette that has allowed the Boston-based New Balance to rocket into the mainstream - the 990V3.

While originally released in 2012, the 990V3 has seemingly become the go silhouette for fans of the OG grey design as well as those interested in the various collaborations seen using the model in recent years with the likes of JJJJound, Bodega and Joe Freshgoods all using it as a canvas.

First teased by Timothy Sabajo, Edson’s brother, an image popped up of the back of the 990V3 with a simple ‘P’ for Patta sitting on the heel along with premium olive green suede showcasing NBs usual high quality, in addition to a speckled rubber midsole.

While it can usually take a while before we see any further images emerge, it was almost instantly that we received further in-hand images of the entire shoe.

Despite coming to expect brightly coloured, multi–detailed, colourways on the New Balance 990V3 thanks to recent collaborations, the first look at the upcoming Patta release takes a very different approach.

Opting to go for a largely toned down colourway, the same olive green suede on the heel is seen wrapping around the entire shoe with the net panelling featuring a closely matched tone. For what is mostly a minimal colourway, Patta has featured bright green overlays on the toe box and around the heel in addition to some subtle blue hints. Grey hits can be found on the tongue, sock liner, N logo and speckled midsole tying the colourway together with the bright green tone from the overlays featured on the shoebox itself.

At the time of writing, no further information has been provided by Patta or New Balance suggesting when we can expect to see the 990V3 release. However, with the trajectory that the two parties have been on recently, this pair is due to be a big one.
