Is the Nike Dunk Low SB ‘What the Paul’ the release of the year?
It’s been a strong year of releases, but none as highly-regarded as the coveted Nike Dunk Low SB ‘What the Paul’.
Nike is well-renowned for its ‘What the’ renditions, taking design cues from its most-lauded colourways on the shoe.
The ‘What the Paul’ Nike Dunk Low pays homage to Nike’s long standing partnership with American skateboarder Paul Rodriguez Jr, who was the first skateboarder to receive his own signature shoe.
Multiple details from Rodriguez’s signature shoes feature throughout the mismatched pairs, including the elephant print overlays, taken from the J-Rod. The toe boxes on each pair reference the skater’s ‘Mexican Blanket’ and ‘Stash’ iterations, while the lace jewel bearing “World Champion” lettering on the right shoe – and the outsole of the left – have been taken from the athlete’s Mexico-themed Nike Dunk High from 2020.
Further detailing includes a multicoloured Swoosh on the lateral sidewall of the left shoe, taken from the 2008 P-Rod 2 ‘Playstation’ release, quilted lining, and padded tongue with alternating tab labels.
With the Nike Dunk seeing a massive resurgence in these past couple of years since celebrating its 35th anniversary, a number of Dunk colourways have been steadily releasing, including: the Travis Scott x Nike Dunk Low SB, the three colourways from the ‘Be True to your School’ pack, alongside summer-ready variations such as the Nike Dunk High ‘Laser Orange’, ‘University Blue’, and ‘Dark Sulfur’ editions.
