Nigo Signs Deal with Nike
Words by - Rebecca Whitley
Nigo Tomoaki Nagao, the legendary Japanese founder of BAPE and Human Made, has signed a deal with Nike.
This news comes after reports of Nike issuing a lawsuit against BAPE due to its infamous BAPESTA sneaker. The case alleged that BAPE, and in turn Nigo, had copied the Air Force 1’s design and shape with similar cases being dealt over the last couple of years. The lawsuit appears to have been settled out of court with little information coming out since the original news broke.
Nevertheless, over two decades after the release of the original BAPESTA, it seems like Nigo and Nike have decided to put the past behind them and team up.
Brendan Dunne of Complex who was the first to leak the news, commented on the potential launch of the Nigo x Nike collaboration, saying: "There's a lot of different things that Nigo could bring to the table. He's known for his playful graphics, so I think there's a lot of potential there. And then there's also the chance for him to put his spin on some classic Nike designs”.
Nigo, who also acts as the current Creative Director of Kenzo, is known for his attention to detail and his ability to seamlessly blend Japanese aesthetics with Western influences. His signature playful graphics have become synonymous with streetwear, and his collaborations with brands like Coca-Cola, Uniqlo, and adidas have been highly sought after.
But now, with the announcement of his partnership with Nike, the possibilities seem endless. Will we see a new line of sneakers with Nigo's bold graphics? Will he put his spin on classic Nike designs like the Air Force 1 or the Dunk? Only time will tell, but one thing's for sure: this collaboration has the potential to be the biggest of next year with the collection slated to arrive in 2024.
